American Cemetery
( Colleville-sur-mer)
Open
daily (except on January 1st and December 25 th) from 9:00 am
to 5:00 pm. Free entrance, correct attire required (dogs prohibited).
The most famous and the most touching cemetery of World War II.
This cemetery and memorial, about 172 acres in extent, was completed
in1956 and groupes all fallen soldiers who were initialy burried
at Vierville and other battle places around. It's one of the fourteen
permanent American World War II cemeteries constructed on foreign
soil to honour the memory of American servicemen and women who
gave their lives to liberate Europe's oppressed people. The graves
area contains precisely aligned 9 387 white headstones in Carrare
(307 are Unknowns) against the immaculately maintained emerald
green law. The Memorial consists of a semi-circled colonnade with
a loggia housing battle maps relating the events of D-Day. A large
22-foot bronze sculpture is centered in the open arc. "The
Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves" overlooks
a large reflecting pool and the Garden of the Missing, located
behind. Near the sea-side, a panoramic table indicates the different
locations of the landing beaches on June 6th 1944. A large stairway
takes you straight to the landing ground of "Omaha Beach".
The lay-out of the Cemetary gives the feeling of being in the
Unites States. Free use as a permanent burial ground was granted
by the government of France in perpetuity without charge or taxation.

Vierville ...
the relics
During low tide at Vierville you can see the rests of an artificial
harbour, constructed like the one at Arromanches. It was partly
detroyed by a storm at the end of June 1944 but that didn't stop
the discharging on the beaches of men and materiels. It was the
key to the succes of the Battle of Normandy.
More than 500 000 men, 100 000 vehicules and 1 100 000 tons of
materiels where unloaded here in only 5 months time.
